How early is TOO early for a house pet?

My husband and I have this dream of our future child growing up with a dog. Granted, I'm not even pregnant yet, but we like to plan ahead.

To those of you who have had a young one in the home, would you recommend having a pet while the child is young? Does it provide ample opportunities to teach the child the values of responsibility and kindness to animals? Or is it more hassle than it's worth?

If you don't have a dog now and plan on being pregnant, I would wait for the child to be a few year old first.

    1) the dog will feel sad when the child arrives
    2) you won't have time to tend to them both - they are both babies and need a lot of attention
    3) the child won't know how to handle a puppy and can really hurt it.
when the child is older, he/she will know better

either get the dog first and let it grow up and then have a child (then you dont have to train both simutaneously), or have the child first let them grow to be a few years and then get a puppy. i think getting a puppy and having a child at the same time will fry your brain and wear you out
