A new mechanical pump called LVAD (left-ventricular assist device) can help people with heart failure wait for a heart transplant. Thousands of people die each year because they cannot get a heart transplant. LVAD's made by Thoratec Corp. of Pleasanton, California, can replace their hearts and pump blood to other parts of their bodies. According to a recent study, LVAD's have a success rate of about 58% compared to 70% for a real heart transplant. However, LVAD's are expensive.
